St Margaret’s Church
The community unites outside the church above and below
St Margaret’s is over 900 years old and may be nearer to 1000 years
It is possible that there was some type of church in Marton, before St Margaret’s.
It is thought that in 637 AD St Paulinus baptised the first Saxon Christians in the River Trent by the Roman ford at Littleborough.
The church was built at the end of the Saxon period, then partly destroyed and rebuilt by the Normans.
Various additions have been constructed throughout the ages and these can be seen from the outside.
